The US Space Agency (NASA) pays volunteers willing to stay in bed for two months at a special center in the German city of Cologne as part of a study conducted in collaboration with the European Space Agency (ESA) on the effects of imponderability, reports on Thursday Press Association.
Although such studies have been previously carried out, this one - which aims to analyze in particular the possible benefits of artificial gravity on astronauts - is first co-operated by the two agencies.
According to ESA, volunteers should be "healthy people between the ages of 20 and 45".
"Most importantly, they must be very motivated," the agency said.
"The study allows us to analyze the problem of muscle atrophy caused by imponderability, but also other stressors such as cosmic radiation, isolation and space restrictions," said Jennifer Ngo-Anh, team leader in ESA's research department.
